Roadmap, security and documentation changes captured for Microsoft Edge.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Sign in to Edge with a Google account

Users can now sign in to Microsoft Edge using a Google account in addition to the Microsoft account from the profile menu and Edge sign-in screen. Available for Windows and macOS devices. Admins can control availability to this feature using the NonMicrosoftAccountSignInEnabled policy.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Allow M365 authentication popups in work profiles

When users are signed in with a work account, some Microsoft 365 sites (for example, microsoft.com, cloud.microsoft, and microsoft365.com) may open authentication pop-up windows to Microsoft sign-in endpoints such as login.microsoftonline.com, login.live.com, or login.microsoft.com. These pop-ups are required to complete sign-in. Microsoft Edge now allows authentication pop-up windows from Microsoft first party services by default. Admins can control availability to this feature using the M365AuthPopupsInWorkEnabled policy.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Passkey Sync for Enterprise Users

Microsoft Edge is introducing support for passkey synchronization for enterprise users, enabling secure, passwordless authentication across devices. Passkeys created in Edge can now be synced seamlessly, improving sign-in experience while maintaining strong security standards.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Enterprise WebView2 runtime downgrade via Downgrade Version policy

Administrators can temporarily roll back specific applications to a previous WebView2 Evergreen Runtime version (N-1 or N-2) using the new Downgrade Version policy in msedgewebview2.admx. This policy allows enterprises to mitigate critical regressions by specifying per-application exe-to-version mappings. The Edge Updater installs the target version side-by-side, and the WebView2 Loader redirects targeted apps accordingly. Downgrades auto-expire with each new WebView2 release: apps pinned to N-1 remain on the same version (now N-2) and auto-update in the next release, while apps pinned to N-2 revert to the current Evergreen version. The policy applies only to enterprise-managed devices (domain-joined or MDM-enrolled).

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Improved website compatibility with site troubleshooting controls

Microsoft Edge is introducing improvements to help users quickly resolve website issues directly from the browser. When a site is not functioning as expected, users may be guided to relevant troubleshooting options such as adjusting tracking prevention settings (e.g., Strict mode) and reviewing site-specific configurations. This experience surfaces relevant actions in-context to help users restore site functionality without navigating deep into settings.

LaunchedPossibleMicrosoft EdgeMicrosoft Copilot (Microsoft 365)

Microsoft Edge: v. 149 - Unifying Copilot Chat policy controls

The Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled policy is becoming the standard for configuring Copilot Chat. Extension and sidebar policies will no longer affect the appearance or functionality of Copilot Chat.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Work Search Banner for Google

When a user performs a search on google.com from a work profile, Microsoft Edge can detect whether organization-specific results are available for that query. When relevant results are found, a banner is shown with a link to explore those work results with Microsoft 365 Copilot. This builds on the existing experience already available on Bing and extends it to Google, helping users seamlessly access work-related information regardless of their search engine. Admins can control access to this feature using the EdgeWorkSearchBannerEnabled policy.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v.149 - Modern, unified, and updated Look and Feel

Microsoft Edge will update the Look and Feel to give customers a unified experience across all of Microsoft AI surfaces including Copilot and Bing. This will change multiple elements of the UX such as spacing, corners, fonts, default colors, etc.

LaunchedMicrosoft EdgeMicrosoft Copilot (Microsoft 365)Microsoft Purview

Microsoft Edge: v.148 - Shadow AI

Currently admins can set Purview DLP policies to protect sensitive data from being sent to any Generative AI apps, users get blocked from sending their prompts to LLM when this is triggered and stops their workflow. This new add-on to the feature shows a new UI that will give users the option to be redirected to M365 Copilot which will open and navigate to this M365 Copilot tab and allow them to send the same prompt there.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Security Update Alerts in the Edge management service

Administrators can choose a severity threshold and receive alerts when a new Edge update includes security fixes that meet or exceed that level, including zero day fixes. This helps organizations quickly identify updates that may require attention, while avoiding unnecessary notifications for routine releases.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Copilot New Tab Page

Search, chat, and explore the web from one search box with Copilot-suggested actions and curated work content to help your users get things done faster on the new, refreshed Copilot New Tab Page. Users can also view personalized news and activities.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Auto-open Copilot side pane for Outlook links

When users open links from Outlook, Microsoft Edge can automatically open the Copilot side pane to provide contextual insights and actionable suggestion chips based on email and destination content - such as highlighting key points, and recommending next actions - without disrupting the browsing flow. This experience helps users quickly understand content, take action with fewer steps, and get more value from Copilot while extending productive browsing time in Edge. Admins can control availability to this feature using the M365LinksAutoOpenCopilotEnabled policy.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Validate Edge builds early with enterprise preview

Enterprise preview provides a simpler way for admins to flight pre-release Edge builds to their users. To reduce friction and bolster usage, users will receive pre-release builds directly inside of their Stable Edge application. Admins can allow users to easily opt-out of the preview experience, using built-in rollback to switch between their pre-release and stable channels with ease. Microsoft 365 admin center users can configure the feature, view their flighting population, and receive personalized recommendations all in one place.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Improvements to site permissions user interfaces

To better align with user expectations, site permissions are changing to look and work both in context on a website that is requesting permissions and when navigating to permissions from Settings. On a website that is requesting permissions, there are changes to the Omnibox and the Page Info dialog and permissions will be easier to see and modify in Settings.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Cross Tenant Support using Intune MAM

Edge for Business extends its capability to deliver Intune App Protection Policies via Intune MAM. Organizations are enabled to apply data loss prevention controls to Edge for Business profiles even on devices managed by another tenant. This capability enforces Intune MAM policies—such as clipboard boundaries, watermarking, and protected downloads—within the Edge work profile, ensuring sensitive data remains governed by your tenant. When enabled, downloads initiated in Edge are redirected to OneDrive for Business instead of local storage, and leak controls for screenshots and DevTools activate when data protection settings are applied. This approach secures cross-tenant scenarios like contractors or mergers without requiring additional apps or disrupting the end user experience.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Enhanced Autofill

For desktop users, Microsoft Edge can now autofill additional document types—including passports, driver’s licenses, and other specialized forms—on top of your saved addresses.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Extensions monitoring in the Edge management service

The Microsoft Edge management service now allows admins to gain visibility into extensions installed across their managed users. From the extensions monitoring page, admins can see which extensions have been installed as well as manage user requests for blocked extensions.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v.145 - Navigation management for Progress Web Apps

Microsoft Edge has improved how a Progressive Web App (PWA) handles user navigation. When a user clicks a link, the browser will determine whether it should launch the installed PWA or open a new browser tab to give users a more seamless experience.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Protected Clipboard

Admins shouldn’t have to choose between locking down copy/paste and risking data leaks. Protected Clipboard offers a smarter way for keeping sensitive data safe without disrupting user workflows. Leveraging Purview DLP policies to define trusted boundaries across managed cloud apps. Data inside those admin defined boundaries can stay protected while external data can enter if needed. Granular control for admins. Seamless productivity for users.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Watermarking Protection

Watermarking Protection in Microsoft Edge helps organizations visibly reinforce data protection policies by overlaying a persistent watermark on sensitive content viewed in the browser. This feature is designed to deter unauthorized sharing, support compliance efforts, and increase user awareness when handling confidential information.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v.148 - Password affiliation service

Password autofill suggestions in Edge are currently based on top-level domain matching, which means the same credentials can be suggested on sites like account.microsoft.com and office.microsoft.com. With this feature, Edge groups related domains together across various desktop and mobile properties called affiliations. When a customer visits a URL, the Edge client will query the affiliations backend to obtain “affiliated groups” for that URL. The process involves sending a hash of the visited URLs to the service, which then returns a list of affiliated URLs and ensures that the relevant credentials will be displayed in the autofill suggestions across affiliated domains. Admins can control access to this feature using the PasswordManagerEnabled policy.

LaunchedMicrosoft EdgeMicrosoft Copilot (Microsoft 365)

Microsoft Edge: v.144 - Copilot icon visibility

Users can now manage the Copilot icon in their toolbar. To hide the icon, right-click the Copilot icon and select “Hide Copilot”. This will open Settings to toggle the icon’s visibility. Admins can control whether the Copilot icon shows in the toolbar using the Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled policy.

Available on Windows devices.  Admins can control availability to this feature using the VisualSearchEnabled policy.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v.141 - Real-time video translation

If you're learning a new language, or just like to watch foreign videos with subtitles in your preferred language, Microsoft Edge can help. With real-time video translation in Edge, you can watch videos in a different language with translated audio dub. Feature availability and functionality may vary by device type, hardware configuration (minimum 12 GB RAM and 4-core CPU), region, and platform. Availability is limited to select markets. Admins can control availability to this feature using the LiveVideoTranslationEnabled policy.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v.140 - HTTPS First Mode

HTTPS-First Mode in Microsoft Edge automatically upgrades HTTP connections to HTTPS when possible. If a site doesn’t support HTTPS, Microsoft Edge shows a warning to highlight the security risk. This appears only for public sites—not private ones or manually entered HTTP URLs. Users can enable the warning in edge://settings and admins can control availability to this feature using the HttpsOnlyMode policy.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v. 140 - Tab Groups – Auto-Save and Easy Revisit

Microsoft Edge now automatically saves tab groups, making it easier than ever for users to pick up where they left off. Organized tab groups are preserved and ready to revisit anytime, whether a user is switching tasks or restarting the browser. Admins can control the availability of the feature using the “SyncTypesListDisabled” policy with the “openTabs” data type.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v.145 - Add “Summarize” and “Explain” Copilot actions in PDF reader

Microsoft Edge will expand its existing “Ask Copilot” integration in the built-in PDF reader by introducing two new actions — “Summarize” and “Explain.” These options will allow users to generate a concise overview or simplify complex content within a PDF or selected portion. The new actions build on the existing “Ask Copilot” integration and follow the same enterprise controls and policies.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v.140 - Improved Navigation to Extension Surfaces

To improve visibility and discoverability, Microsoft Edge is introducing two navigation improvements for extensions. First, if a user has at least one enabled extension, the puzzle icon will be persistent on the toolbar. Second, from the Settings and more menu, the Extensions option will allow users to reach edge://extensions and the Edge Add-ons Store directly.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v.142 - Open external links in another profile when recommended by external applications

When Microsoft Edge is set as the default browser to open external links from applications, Microsoft Edge must determine which profile to open the links. Users can control which profile to use through the “Default profile for external links” setting. Applications such as Microsoft Teams or Outlook can also recommend a profile for the links. Currently, the user setting is prioritized over application recommendations. With this feature, the application recommended profile is given priority, instead of the profile selected in the setting. Admins can control the availability of the feature using the “EdgeOpenExternalLinksWithAppSpecifiedProfile” policy.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: A Refreshed Profile Flyout Experience for Better Clarity and Actionability

We’re updating the Microsoft Edge profile flyout to deliver a cleaner, more intuitive experience. The refreshed design makes it easier to distinguish between work and personal profiles, manage credentials, and quickly access key settings—all within a polished interface that supports modern browsing needs. With streamlined sign-in, clearer profile types, and organization branding preserved, this update enables a more efficient and trustworthy experience for customers.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: AI-powered History search

Enhanced search finds sites in your History even when you use a synonym, phrase, or typo. After this feature is turned on, sites you visit will be shown in enhanced history search results. An on-device model is trained using your data, which never leaves your device and is never sent to Microsoft. Admins can use the EdgeHistoryAISearchEnabled policy to disable this feature.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Use Primary work profile as default profile to open external links

Following further review, this feature has returned to the development phase. We apologize for any inconvenience. Microsoft Edge currently opens external links using the “Last Used” profile by default. While for enterprise users, the Primary Work Profile (signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID for enrolling the device) is normally the best profile for opening external links. With this feature, for Windows, Edge will check if it the Primary Work Profile exists and make it the default profile for opening external links if available. For Mac and Linux, if only one work profile signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID account is found, it’s treated as the Primary Work Profile. Admins can config the policy “EdgeOpenExternalLinksWithPrimaryWorkProfileEnabled” to turn this feature off.

LaunchedMicrosoft Copilot (Microsoft 365)Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Ask Copilot from the address bar

When users type a search query in the Edge address bar, they will have the option to send their search query directly to Copilot for a synthesized, more targeted answer pulling from across the web (and their work content, for premium users).

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge will launch the new version of the built-in PDF reader that's powered by Adobe’s PDF rendering engine. The new PDF reader ensures that there's no loss of functionality and delivers an enhanced PDF experience. This experience includes richer rendering, improved performance, strong security for PDF handling, and greater accessibility.

LaunchedMicrosoft PurviewMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Purview compliance portal: New Inline Protection controls for AI apps in Edge for Business

With the new inline protection capability for Edge for Business, you can prevent data leakage across the various ways that users interact with sensitive data in the browser, including typing of text directly into a web application or generative AI prompt. Starting with some of the top consumer GenAI apps (ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and DeepSeek), admins will be able to block typed prompts containing sensitive data.  The inline protection capability complements existing endpoint DLP controls for uploading or pasting sensitive content in the browser.

LaunchedMicrosoft PurviewMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Purview compliance portal: Data Loss Prevention - New inline data protection in Edge for Business for unmanaged Windows and macOS devices

Following further review, we mistakenly marked the roadmap as "launched." The correct status is In Development. We apologize the inconvenience. When using Microsoft Edge for Business as the secure enterprise browser, Admins in Purview DLP can now configure policies that apply protections directly in the Edge browser that target scenarios where users on unmanaged (or BYO) devices are sharing data to or exfiltrating data from org-managed cloud apps (apps which use Entra authentication for user sign-in).

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: AI theme generator

Microsoft Edge will include an AI theme generator, that allows users to input a text prompt and generate a series of images to preview as browser themes. Applying the theme includes setting the generated image on the Edge new tab page, and applying the image's dominant color to the browser frame. Admins can restrict access to this feature using the AIGenThemesEnabled policy.

LaunchedMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: v.140 - Auto-discarding Sleeping Tabs

Tabs that have been sleeping for a long time will be discarded to save memory. When a user navigates back to a discarded tab, the tab will need to be reloaded. This can be managed through the AutoDiscardSleepingTabsEnabled policy. This policy will be enabled if the SleepingTabsEnabled policy is enabled.

In developmentMicrosoft Edge

Microsoft Edge: Rewrite by Copilot in Edge is being upgraded to include enterprise data protection compliance standards

Rewrite by Copilot in Edge, which lets users edit typed text for tone, format, and length within an open page in Microsoft Edge, is being updated to include enterprise data protection for commercial customers. Once Rewrite is available, users signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID will have enterprise data protection when using the feature in Microsoft Edge. Updated March 20, 2026: We have paused release of this feature temporarily and will announce new release timelines soon. We apologize for any inconvenience.
